Posted on November 29, 2019
When you need to troubleshoot electrical equipment, you will either need to replace the faulty component or replace the defective equipment completely. In order to do it properly, you need to be able to use some electrical fault finding techniques that will allow you to discover the problem and solve it.
So, when you are trying to fault finding what is wrong, you will need some basic knowledge about electrical faults as well as knowing a bit about electrical diagrams.
It’s important to keep in mind that an electric circuit is composed of a wide variety of parts. These components include motors, switches, pumps, lights, relays, fans, circuit breakers, fuses, and fusible links. So, when you have a wiring diagram, everything will be a lot simpler. After all, you just need to fault finding since you will be able to identify most components.
Checking The Electrical Components
The first thing that you will need to do in any fault finding process is to check each of the components on your electric circuit. Your goal is to determine if they are all functioning properly.
One of the simplest problems that you may find is to see that several different components or circuits fail at the same time. When this happens, then you know that the problem needs is in the fuse/power connection or in the shared earth connection.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that this is a very rare situation. In most cases, electrical problems can appear due to a wide range of issues. Some of them include blown fuses, loose or corroded connections, melted fusible links, faulty earth connection, faulty sensor or even a faulty relay. So, before you even start the fault finding inspection, you should check the fuses, the wires, and all the connections in the circuit.
How To Carry Out Fault Finding
One of the tools that you should consider using when you are fault finding is the DVOM (Digital Volt-Ohm Meter. In case you don’t know, this is the tool that you need to use when you want to check the resistance, volt, amperage, continuity, and continuity and test the lights for load and voltage drop.
In the case the problem that you are having is related to intermittent faults, then you should perform a wiggling test on wiring. After all, this tends to occur due to poor or dirty connections, damaged wiring insulation, and internally broken wiring.
Using The Electrical Continuity Test
In order to perform the continuity test and check the continuity of your circuit, you should use the dead continuity testing: You will need to switch off the power to make sure that you don’t get a shock. Then, you will need to use the multi-meter knob until you hear the beep sound that tells you that the electrical path is complete. If the path is broken, you won’t hear any beep at all.
Fault Finding Difficulties
It is important to realise that every person has their limitations. When you don’t have a lot of experience with these tasks and you aren’t sure about the safety of your appliance. Then it is better to call an emergency electrician. An emergency electrician will be able to determine the problem that you are having and will know how to quickly solve it.
