Posted on February 4, 2022
When it comes to power lines and power poles there are different responsibilities for different people. Most times whatever is situated on a person’s property means that they are responsible for organising an electrician to work on them. Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy will work on their respective power lines and power poles and will provide an electrical defect notice if they notice any issues on people’s properties. Here at The Local Electrician, our Level 2 Electrician team are here to perform electrical work on power lines and power poles in Sydney local’s properties.
Who is responsible for power lines and power poles is often determined by where they are situated. Private power poles on people’s properties will mean that they are responsible for their maintenance and function. Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy are responsible for their power lines and poles which are often located on the street.
Who is Responsible for Power Lines and Power Poles?
Electrical Distributor Networks
Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy are the two main electrical distributor networks for the Sydney area. They have power lines and power poles running on the street to help with connecting homes to electricity. At times their cables will run to a property’s private power pole which means that beyond that point they are not responsible for looking after those systems. But for the power lines and power poles situated on the street or in shared areas, they are responsible for ensuring they are working correctly.
Property Owners
For power lines and power poles installed on private property, it will be the priority owner who is responsible for them. A private power pole can be installed on a property to have the electrical cables on the street be connected to the private pole first then to the home or building. They improve street safety and allow the appearance of the home to be clearer with cables not running directly in front of the house. When there are issues with the pole, such that they have fallen over, then the property owner needs to organise an electrician to resolve the problems.
For strata buildings, the owner of the building rather than the individuals living or working within it will be responsible for contacting an electrician. This is because the cables and poles are on the shared area rather than each unit owner having their own pole and cable system therefore the strata building owner is responsible for them.
Tree Trimming
Tree trimming will be done depending on where the tree is located. If the tree is located on the street or public area and touches both street and private property cables then the electrical network companies or local control is responsible for organising a tree trimmer. When a tree is near and touches street or private property cables and is located on private property then a tree trimmer needs to be contacted and organised by the property owner.
Electrical Defect Notices
An electrical defect notice is given out by Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy to property owners when they find defects that need fixing on their property. Since these electrical distributor companies are not responsible for systems on private property they cannot work on repairs in them as well. They can still find issues and defects however and when they do they will give out a notice. The notice will need to be addressed within 21 days by a level 2 asp electrician and all organised by the property owner. Most times the notice will be given out from defects on the private power pole and cables, consumer mains, and fallen powerlines and power poles.
