What are Flood Lights?

A flood light is a type of external light that will provide light to a wider area as they produce a wide light beam. The beam can be up to a width of 120 degrees and is often installed in places where regular lights cannot properly light up the place.

Most of the flood lights of today are LEDs to ensure electricity usage is lower and the system provides a stronger and more reliable light. LED flood lighting helps with energy savings but is also made to be weatherproof and long lasting.

What are the Benefits of Flood Lights?

A flood light is a type of external light that will provide light to a wider area as they produce a wide light beam. The beam can be up to a width of 120 degrees and is often installed in places where regular lights cannot properly light up the place.

Most of the flood lights of today are LEDs to ensure electricity usage is lower and the system provides a stronger and more reliable light. LED flood lighting helps with energy savings but is also made to be weatherproof and long lasting.a

The main advantages that come with installing LED flood lights around the home are:

  • Energy efficient – because the floodlights are LEDs they will not cost as much to run as other lights
  • Weatherproof – being installed outside most flood lights will be designed to resist the weather, such as being waterproof
  • Low heat – with the lights being energy efficient it also means that energy is not wasted on producing heat
  • Temperature resistance – similar to being weatherproof, these lights can stand high and low temperatures
  • Security – the large amount of light produced also helps with security purposes
  • Light – having a special reflector built into it, this is why the light is so bright and produces an intense beam

How Do I Choose a Flood Light?

The following is a guide on what to look for when purchasing a flood light:

  • Lumens – this is the level of how bright the light will shine
  • Voltage – this is the measurement of how much electricity the light uses, higher energy efficient lights means the less energy used and energy costs are lower
  • Colour – often with LEDs the colour is a cool white, but other types available are daylight white or warm white
  • IP rating – this is what conveys how waterproof and weather resistant the light will be
  • IK rating – this is the level of how resistant the light is to impact, such as being hit by a ball
  • Beam angle – knowing the angle the light will produce will be important to know if it suits the area

What Should I Consider When Installing Flood Lights?

There are many different considerations to make before installing the right light:

  • Mounting height – the location or mounting height needs to be determined before installing the light. Most times the light should be 10m from the ground when wanting to illuminate the most effectively
  • Spacing – knowing the distance between the flood lights if there are more than one is needed. Often the distance between the lights should be the vertical height by 4.
  • Angle or aim – the direction the light shine is recommended to point ⅔ of the area where the light will illuminate

How Much Do Flood Lights Cost to Install?

To initially purchase flood lights, quality ones range from $400 – $500 and can rise spending on the brand and quality. Installing the lights on average is around $75 – $150 per hour for labour where the location, how many lights and intensity of the job influence the price. A licensed electrician will need to install the lights and ensure that they illuminate correctly and safely.

Other types of flood lighting tasks that can increase the overall price to purchase and install them include motion sensors, smart lighting and wider range. These are additions to the lighting system and will further the price due to more work needing to be done.

What are Common Issues with Flood Lights?

Along with other lights, flood lights can experience damages and issues which would need an electrical contractor to resolve the problems. Common issues or worries with flood lights include:

  • Blown circuit – if the flood lights draw out too much electricity or experience an electrical spike then the circuit may blow
  • Flickering – if the lights flicker then there are many reasons for this problem to occur with the flood lights. The bulb may be loose, the LED lights may be of a lower quality or a wire connection has become loose. An electrician will be able to find the cause of the lights not shining correctly
  • Sounds – sounds, most times buzzing, will mean that there are certain problems occurring with the light. Common problems that cause the lights to make noises include loose wiring connections, older light bulbs and power supply disruptions.
